A Doll’s House

Book A Doll’s House tickets starring Jessica Chastain at the Playhouse Theatre.

Jessica Chastain makes her West End debut as Nora in Frank McGuinness’ ‘triumphant and thrilling’ (The New Yorker) adaptation of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House at the in a radical new production by director Jamie Lloyd.

Nora seems to have it all – a successful husband, adorable children and a beautiful home. But her acceptance of the status quo is about to undergo a profound change. Is this picture-perfect life anything more than an act? And what happens if she is no longer willing to play her role?

Jessica Chastain first came to notice in 2011 when she appeared in the blockbuster The Help, earning a supporting actress Oscar nod for the role, followed by The Tree of Life.  She won a Golden Globe and garnered another Academy Award nomination for  Zero Dark Thirty. She made her Broadway debut in a revival of The Heiress in the same year. The most recent film credits include It Chapter Two, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Molly’s Game and The Zookeeper’s Wife.

A Doll’s House premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 21 December 1879 and is set in a Norwegian town around the same period. It is influenced by the life of Laura Kielerm a good friend of the playwright. The play deals with the fate of a married woman, who at the time had to fight for any opportunities for self-fulfilment in a male-dominated society.  It questions the traditional roles of men and women in 19th-century marriage which to many 19th-century Europeans was scandalous.

Following Cyrano de Bergerac and The Seagull, the third and final show in The Jamie Lloyd Company’s Playhouse Season is a story of one woman’s fight for her own life.
