Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Boublil and Schönberg’s Les Misérables has reopened the newly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formally the Queen’s Theatre).
Set in early 19th-century France, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean and his desire for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Breaking his parole, Valjean starts his life anew after a bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy. However, he is relentlessly pursued by the police inspector, Javert. Along the way, matters are swept up during the revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists attempt to overthrow the government at a street barricade.
This brilliant new staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed “Les Mis for the 21st Century”. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home, One Day More and Master Of The House. Seen by over 120 million people worldwide in 52 countries and in 22 languages, Les Misérables is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular musical.
The current Les Miserables cast includes Jon Robyns (Jean Valjean), Bradley Jaden (Javert), Matt Lucas (Thénardier), Carrie Hope Fletcher (Fantine), Shan Ako (Eponine), Harry Apps (Marius), Josefina Gabriell (Madame Thénardier) Ashley Gilmour (Enjolras) and Lily Kerhoas (Cosette).
Les Misérables is the world’s longest-running musical now in its 35th year in London.
